Rewards for Justice is offering a reward of up to $10 million for information any individual responsible for the 2019 attack on the Asasey Hotel in Kismayo, Somalia.
On July 12, 2019, an al-Shabaab suicide bomber detonated a vehicle-borne improvised explosive device at the gated Asasey Hotel, allowing other al-Shabaab terrorists to enter the facility. The attackers killed 26 people, including two Americans, and seriously injured 56 others. Somali security forces killed four of the attackers.
Al-Shabaab is responsible for numerous terrorist attacks in Kenya, Somalia, and neighboring countries that have killed thousands of people, including U.S. citizens. The Department of State designated al-Shabaab as a Foreign Terrorist Organization (FTO) and Specially Designated Global Terrorist (SDGT) in March 2008. In April 2010, al-Shabaab was also designated by the UN Security Council’s Somalia Sanctions Committee pursuant to paragraph 8 of resolution 1844 (2008).
